Enlightenment
One word but two different meanings: there is the Age of Enlightenment, and spiritual enlightenment of the New Age movement.
- The Enlightenment, or the Age of Enlightenment, or the Age of Reason: refers to the emphasis upon human reason and autonomy -a characteristic of much Western European and North American thought during the eighteenth century. The term “Enlightenment” was only used from the nineteenth century onwards to refer to this period of time.
- In the New Age spirituality (or New Thought), “enlightenment” is an awakening, an heightened spiritual consciousnesses aiming at the realisation of one’s inner divinity.
